At a secluded port in Bellagio, Italy, David Humber proposed to his sweetheart Emily Shoda with a stunning diamond ring. The Oahu couple returned home to share their exciting engagement news with their families. Plans were soon underway for an intimate church ceremony at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Kula, Maui, with the reception following at Pua Le’a Estate in Haiku.
As a child, Emily spent weekends at her grandparent’s home in Upcountry, Maui and she longed to share the quaint, country setting with her celebrants. The couple decided to spend their wedding weekend at the Alanui Ranch Estates enjoying the outdoors with their guests who had traveled from California and the neighboring isles to be with them. On the dawn before the wedding, the couple’s parents hosted a rehearsal dinner at the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center in Haliimaile. Emily says, “Our time together felt so special because we were all tourists on Maui!”
David and Emily choose to wed at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Kula, a small chapel that affords panoramic views of the glistening Pacific Ocean. For the bride, the expansive farm country setting and crisp climate abounded in happy childhood memories. Guests were greeted with fragrant tuberose lei in true island-style. A fresh color palette of lemon yellow, sage green and silver marked the autumn day. The mother-of-the-bride created beautiful floral arrangements of garden roses, succulents, hydrangea and dusty miller for the wedding party. Emily wore a custom-made gown by Creations by Toy accented with a chic veil pinned to her bun. David was a handsome groom in a sharp gray suit with an ivory silk tie. As the church bells sounded, the elated couple were pronounced man and wife.
An intimate reception followed at the Pua Le’a Estate, a historical landmark reminiscent of a European country manor, tucked away in the lush green hills of Haiku. The design team at A White Orchid Wedding adorned the open-air garden setting in ornate and fanciful details. “The Haiku Mill has a sort-of shabby chic look to it that is really in line with my taste,” the bride says. “I wanted everything to have a vintage, one-of-a-kind feel.” The courtyard was aglow with soft white lights and grand chandeliers. Loose rose petals encircled blue and white porcelain antique vases at each tabletop. Letterpress menus by Miemiko Atelier featured feminine scroll typography atop bright sheets of paper. Each guest took home a delicious taste of the island’s with them— Upcountry jam and honey were placed at each setting as an escort card and favor. Celebrants spent the evening savoring seared prime rib and unagi wrapped in banana leaves with Thai coconut curry, prepared by chef Michael Feil. Champagne and cake was served and the wedding party took to the dance floor. The newlyweds danced late into the evening with all of their closest friends and family. It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable celebration of love.
